Every little girl wants a princess themed birthday party. Use these instructions for princess invitations, a castle-shaped cake, and princess party games.

While it's difficult to understand just why little girls are so crazy about princesses, parents can still throw an amazing homemade princess theme birthday party with these step-by-step instructions and ideas. From invitations to princess party supplies to activities and cake, here is everything parents need to know about throwing a princess birthday party.

Princess Party Invitations – Tiara Shaped Invitations

The fun crown birthday party invitations pictured below (click to enlarge) are easy to make with just a few simple supplies. To make princess birthday party invitations:

  1. Freehand a crown or tiara shape on a folded piece of posterboard. One side of the tiara should touch the fold.
  2. Color, paint, or tape a printed tiara from the Internet onto the front of the invitation.
  3. On the inside, print the words "Princess [name of birthday girl] requests your presence at a royal celebration! Have your chariot arrive at [address] at [start time and date] and return to pick you up at [end time.] Please RSVP to the queen at [phone number.]"

Princess Birthday Party Activity – Pin the Jewel on the Tiara

On a large piece of butcher paper or posterboard, draw an outline of an ornately decorated jeweled crown or tiara. While the birthday girl is busy coloring it in, cut out rubies and emeralds from construction paper.

Once the party starts, tape the tiara to a wall or flat surface, grab a blindfold, and play pin the jewel on the tiara.

Princess Party Games – Hide from the Dragon

For a princess theme birthday game that requires no advanced planning or materials, play hide and seek with a twist. The person looking for the other princesses is the "dragon," and the last one found becomes the next dragon. Older children might enjoy playing freeze tag with dragons and princesses.

Craft for a Princess Birthday Party Make a Princess Cone Hat

Ahead of time, cut out one large semicircle from sturdy poster board for each gust. Glue some tulle to the top center and fasten the sides of the poster board together to form a cone. The tulle should be flowing out from the top of the cone. Hot glue ribbons on either side of the cone around the bottom to tie in a knot beneath the princess's chin. If desired, draw a border around the bottom or edge it with ribbon to give it a more finished appearance.

During the princess party, girls can personalize their hats by using stick-on jewels, stickers, and markers to decorate it. See an example of the finished product below (click to enlarge.)

Princess Cut Up Cake How to Make a Castle Birthday Cake

The castle shaped cut-up cake pictured below was made from a rectangular 9x13" cake. To make the cake take the baked 9x13" cake and:

  1. Cut two strips across the short side; one strip about 2" wide and the other about 1" wide.
  2. The remaining part of the cake becomes the base of the castle.
  3. Cut the 1" strip into three rectangles.
  4. Place the rectangles vertically above the base of the cake for turrets.
  5. Cut the 2" strip into three squares.
  6. Place the squares in diamond orientation at the top of each turret.
  7. Frost entire cake white and decorate as desired with gumdrops, Skittles, and frosting. Let the birthday girl help if she is old enough.

The beauty of this cake is that it can easily become a tiara birthday cake. Instead of windows and a door, simply frost the cake yellow and use embellishments to create jewels.

Any princess themed birthday party benefits from the right party games, activities, crafts, and cake. This versatile party is appropriate for preschoolers and elementary girls of any age. Parents can use these princess birthday ideas to throw the perfect party for their daughter's special day.
